The pictures shown here for the gew98 - 3 of them have two incorrect captions. NylesĪs a collector of the gew98 rifle and it's accessories some corrections are in order here. That said, original WW1 Ottoman Mausers in 7.65mm are even rarer than original Gewehr 98s, again because they were all converted to 8mm M38s. By comparison, Turkish M38 Mausers are plentiful, made a good substitute, and 5 years ago could be purchased for $80 each. A nice one will often sell for $800 - $1000, as Ungesehen said, lots were destroyed in the war and the majority of the survivors were converted to any number of different models by half a dozen different countries. Original Gewehr 98s are extremely hard to find in any condition - it took me 8 years of looking to get mine and it's a pretty one that I paid $600 for and considered a good deal. Non-German Army Mausers are abundant, mostly in at least average condition, and very very inexpensive compared to the real (historically accurate) deal. The Ottoman Empire had already received generous amounts of G98s (including more or less the entire 1916 Mauser Oberndorf am Neckar factory production run) as wartime ally, and was supplied with even more after the war as Germany turned towards shorter Karabiner rifles and got rid of most of the old stuff. Many of them were destroyed due to disarmament provisions after WWI, or converted, or kept in store, or sold to other countries. Unaltered G98s are relatively expensive today, or in very poor condition and less often available. I was just wondering, is it easier to get, say, a Turkish model of the Mauser then the actual German? Seems that way with some films. The Karabiner 98b was modeled almost exactly after it. That second picture is actually a "Bicycle troops" rifle - the only one with the turndown bolt and lange rear sight. The K98 Sniper doesn't belong on this page. From the information I have found, these scopes were used in Germany in the interwar years by both the German Weimar military for building sniper rifles as well as civilian arms makers for use on high quality sporting rifles. The front and rear solid mounts are present and included but I don't have the bases to fit them. From what information I can find about these scopes, the "C" indicates that it is a 4.5X scope.

The only markings on the scope other than some serial numbers is the name "GERARD" with a capital letter "C" above it. The scope adjustments function and turn smoothly however the focus ring is a bit stiff. There is a small pinhead size dot on the horizontal crosshair which I am not sure if it is supposed to be there or if it is a blemish, but otherwise everything looks great internally for a scope of this age. The horizontal posts are a bit unusual in that they have a very fine crosshair joining them in the center. The optics are nice and clear and have a European style three post reticle. tube that still retains much of it's original blue finish however it has some fading to a dark plum color. This scope is in very good used condition. Offered is an old original German "GERARD" 4.5X Rifle Scope Sight.
